Anyone searching online for information about C60 in olive oil comes across more than just people's experiences. Dog, cat and horse owners also discuss using it for their animals. Often this involves older animals, or animals whose owners pay extra attention to vitality, mobility and general well-being.
That makes the topic interesting, but also one that calls for nuance.
Research on C60 in animals does exist, but that research is still largely at an experimental stage. On top of that, the results are not always consistent. In this article we therefore look separately at what pet owners report online, which possible benefits have been studied, and where the limits of our current knowledge lie.
Supplements and nutraceuticals are already widely used by owners of dogs, cats and horses. In doing so, people often look for products that fit within a broader routine around nutrition, exercise, comfort and healthy aging.
Within that world, C60 has drawn attention because of its unusual molecular structure and its possible interaction with free radicals and oxidative processes.
That does not automatically mean, however, that C60 is a proven supplement for animals. Most of what is known still comes from experimental research.
When owners share their experiences with C60 oil, certain themes come up again and again.
With older companion animals, the interest is often about general well-being and quality of life.
Owners mention, for example, changes they observe themselves in:
These are personal observations. They are not proof that C60 causes these changes.
Older animals can vary greatly from one day to the next, and nutrition, medication, exercise, pain management and other factors all play a role as well.
A second frequently discussed topic is movement.
Owners of older dogs and horses in particular describe online that they are exploring C60 in the context of:
The scientific interest in this is mainly linked to research on oxidative stress and inflammatory processes.
There is, for example, a study in which liposoluble C60 was investigated in beagle dogs. In that study the amount of C-reactive protein, an inflammation marker in the blood, decreased after oral administration of C60 dissolved in grapeseed oil. That is scientifically interesting, but a single study on a biomarker is not yet proof of a clinical benefit in ordinary pets.
C60 received a great deal of international attention following a well-known 2012 rat study.
In it, C60 dissolved in olive oil was administered orally to rats. The researchers reported a striking extension of lifespan and suggested that a reduction of oxidative stress might play a role in this.
That study is an important reason why C60 later also became popular within longevity and animal circles.
But the story does not end there.
A later study in mice was unable to demonstrate any significant improvement in lifespan or healthspan. That research also raised questions about differences between commercial C60 oils and about the influence of light on the stability and safety of C60 in oil.
For this reason, it cannot be concluded from the original rat study that C60 extends the lifespan of dogs, cats or horses.
This is probably the scientifically most interesting part of the C60 story.
Various experimental models have studied how fullerenes deal with reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress.
In rat studies, for instance, effects have been investigated in the context of chemically induced oxidative and genetic damage, among other things. Other experimental studies have likewise found changes in markers associated with oxidative load.
This supports the reason why researchers find C60 interesting.
It does not yet mean, however, that a healthy pet automatically benefits from daily C60 oil.
For horses too, there are online groups and articles in which C60 oil is discussed.

For horses, however, the amount of specific clinical research on C60 is particularly limited.
Much of the information circulating online is therefore based on owners' experiences, extrapolation from research in other species, or general theory around oxidative stress.
That makes it an interesting subject for further research, but not yet an established veterinary application.
For dogs there is at least some direct experimental research.
In a study with beagles, C60 dissolved in grapeseed oil was administered orally. The researchers saw a decrease in serum CRP, a marker associated with inflammatory activity. They concluded that liposoluble C60 deserves further research as a possible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory candidate material.
In addition, older experimental research investigated C60 derivatives in dogs in very specific medical models.
These are valuable scientific signals, but they are something quite different from a controlled clinical study in which a C60 olive oil product is given over a long period to ordinary older dogs.
That study is still missing today.
For cats, the scientific basis is thinner still.
Although C60 products are offered online for cats and owners share experiences, there is little quality clinical data specifically for cats.
In cats in particular, caution is important, because their metabolism differs strongly from that of humans and dogs in several respects.
Online experiences should therefore certainly not be automatically translated into a general dosing recommendation.
One interesting finding from research is that not every commercially offered C60 oil turns out to be the same.

This underlines how important product quality, analytical control and correct storage can be when working with such materials.
Light is relevant too.
The same study reported that C60 in olive oil, under certain conditions and when exposed to light, could form reactive products that proved harmful in mice.
For C60 formulations, production method, storage and protection from light are therefore not trivial details.
There are enough scientific signals to understand why both researchers and pet owners are interested in C60.

But the evidence is still insufficient to say that C60 in olive oil offers proven benefits for dogs, cats, horses or other pets.
In particular, claims such as a longer lifespan, treatment of joint problems, pain reduction, treatment of inflammation or treatment of disease go beyond what current research supports.
Perhaps that is the best way to look at C60 in animals today.
It is an interesting area of research with unusual properties and a few striking animal studies. At the same time, there are still major gaps in our knowledge about long-term use, optimal formulation, species differences and safety.
Personal experiences from pet owners can give rise to new research questions, but must not be confused with controlled scientific evidence.
